Josefa
Josefa graduated high school in 2017 after 3 years in the Victor's Vision program. She lives with her mom and younger sister, Ashly, in Chulucanas. Her mother finished secondary school and takes care of children. When she was 13, Josefa had to switch schools to a public school because her family didn't have enough money to pay for her old school, and her new school "wasn't very good." She met Yakori, another Victor's Vision student, there and her parents could see that Yakori was doing well in school Yakori told them all about Victor's Vision, and they wanted to learn more. Josefa's parents decided to send her to Victor's Vision because they knew this was "her chance to get the same education she would get at a private school."
Upon graduating in 2017, Josefa told us: "My mom is really happy with the program because I’m learning a lot here and doing very well. She’s sending my little sister now too. My goals are to finish secondary school as well as possible, then I’m hoping to go university to study economics in Piura or in Lima. With that I want to work my way up to working for a bigger corporation in Lima or Piura. Wherever I can get the best job. Once I’ve done that, my next goal is to go law school. Then with that and my economics degree, I’m hoping to get involved with politics. Ideally I’d love to be a congresswoman in Piura and be able to support my own community of Chulucanas through that."
"I feel very prepared for my entrance exams because I’ve applied myself as much as I can these last few years. My parents are always reminding me how important education is and if I work hard I know I can do this. This program has helped me a lot because math specifically in my other school is very simple. They only teach us the basics, but here we learn the more complex topics that we need for university."
Upon her graduating in December 2017 with Victor's Vision's inaugural class, Josefa received a diploma for first place in academic performance and also received the award for excellence as the best student in her grade. In April 2018, Josefa became one of the first Victor's Vision students to be accepted to university. She was accepted to and enrolled at the Universidad Nacional de Piura (UNP) to study accounting. UNP is one of the most competitive universities in Peru, as Josefa's tuition will be fully funded.
